South of Lefkada is Sivota, the most beautiful bay on the island. The small harbor village lies around a sweeping cove with hillsides covered in olive groves and forest trees.
According to the German archaeologist Dorpfeld, Sivota is regarded as the historic port of Forkyna, where the Phaeanicians left Odysseus after returning to his homeland after the Trojan war.
Originally the residents of nearby Evgiros village used Sivota as their base as its natural harbor, tucked in behind the headland provided safe and calm mooring for their boats. In the 1970s the first simple fish taverns opened in the harbor and as the years brought more visitors to the island the village as a residential place evolved into the charming place it is today.
Views from the right side of the hillside take in the end of Mikros Gialos bay and Meganisi island whilst if you stay on the left side of Sivota bay you will see Arkoudi island and the tip of Kefalonia.
Popular with sailing boats and private yachts the harbor is quiet in the daytime and bustles with life morning and evening as the boats come and go for the day. The choice of taverns and smart cafes is ample to keep you occupied for a relaxed week stay in this beautiful location. For beach lovers the quiet beaches of Afteli, Ammouso and Mikros Gialos are within easy reach.
